Family: Fabaceae
Genus: Andira
Species: inermis
Common names: Cabbage tree, cabbage bark, angelin, angelin-tree, almendro, ajunado, cocu, manteco
General Description and Location: Cabbage tree is a popular ornamental tree found in tropical countries. It is known for providing shade and for its beautiful and fragrant flowers. Indigenous to most of the tropics, this is cultivated in Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, the Amazon, South America, and the tropical regions of West Africa.
It is also found in New Zealand where it adapted to various and differing climactic and geographic conditions, including swamps and areas where damp conditions prevail. A mature Cabbage Tree can tolerate below-freezing temperatures.
This tree grows rapidly and needs frequent fertilizing. The tree is showy and exotic, wearing a crown of fragrant cream-colored flowers periodically. This tree is tall and straight, with a dense round tufted head. The bark is thick and rough. Because the cabbage tree grows so fast and is tall and slim, it can easily fit into a small spot in the landscape and show off its beauty almost immediately.
Uses: This tree has been grown in coastal areas outside the tropics, because it can tolerate some degree of frost. It lends a tropical touch to the landscape and is popular outside the tropics for that purpose. The Cabbage Tree is now sold in garden centers in Europe and North America because of its tolerance for cold climates.
